India–UK CETA and social security convention enter into force

The India–UK CETA and Double Contributions Convention took effect on 15 July 2026, giving zero duty on about 99% of India's exports to the UK and a five-year contribution exemption.

What changed

The CETA, signed on 24 July 2025, entered into force on 15 July 2026 with zero duty on about 99% of India’s exports to the UK. The Double Contributions Convention exempts Indian workers and employers from dual contributions on temporary UK assignments for up to five years (previously three). UK-built cars within quota pay 30–50% duty, falling to 10% by year five.

UK groups with Indian subsidiaries or secondees, exporters to the UK and UK vehicle makers.

What to do

Review secondment arrangements for the five-year exemption, check product origin under the CETA, and for vehicles apply for DGFT quota certificates.
